About The Timken Company

The Timken Company is an American manufacturer of bearings and related components and assemblies. The company was founded in 1899 and for much of the 20th century was a steelmaker concentrating mainly on alloy steel tube, but the steel business line was spun off into TimkenSteel in 2014. Timken operates in more than 30 countries.

The Timken Company was founded by Henry Timken in St. Louis, Missouri. It was incorporated after Henry obtained a patent for his creation - the tapered roller bearing. In 1901, the company moved to Canton, Ohio, where they entered the automobile industry with their bearings. Timken entered international markets in the early 1900’s, after their bearings made a lasting impression in World War I, and established a heavy presence in Europe. The company continued expansion throughout the 1970’s and 80’s as they entered Japan, Italy, Korea, Singapore, and Venezuela. This trend continued through the 90’s as they entered markets in Spain, Hong Kong, and China. Timken altered its corporate structure in 2014, separating the roller bearing part and steel manufacturing part of the business. TimkenSteel was created to handle steel operations.
