Woodward Inc was founded in 1870 as The Woodward Governor Company by Amos Woodward. In the earlier stages of their business ventures, Woodward initially made controls for waterwheels followed by hydro turbines. The company began designing controls for diesel engines, industrial turbines, and reciprocating engines throughout the 1920’s and 30’s. The advent of gas turbine engines for aircraft and industrial uses offered more opportunities for Woodward designed controls and governors.  In the 1950’s, Woodward developed a governor for variable-pitch aircraft propellers, leading to manufacturing contract with the United States military. Woodward began designing analog and digital control units during this same time as well. Currently, Woodward’s governors, synchronizers, and synchrophasors are used on turboshaft, turboprop, and reciprocating engine aircraft. In 2008, Woodward acquired both MotoTron Corp and MPC Products, expanding their business. The trend continued in 2018 when Woodward and Rolls-Royce announced an agreement for Woodward to acquire L’Orange, a fuel injection systems technology company.

Aerospace: The aerospace segment designs, manufactures, and services systems and products for the management of fuel, air, combustion, and motion control.  These products include fuel pumps, metering units, actuators, air valves, specialty valves, fuel nozzles, and thrust reverser actuation systems for turbine engines and nacelles, as well as flight deck controls, actuators, servocontrols, motors and sensors for aircraft.  These products are used on commercial and private aircraft, helicopters, military fixed-wing aircraft and rotorcraft, guided weapons, and other defense systems. Woodward manufactures components for an array of commercial aircraft, rotorcraft, and business jet platforms, such as the Airbus A320neo, Boeing 737 MAX and the 787, Bell 429 and Gulfstream G650. Woodward also utilizes their products for defense applications on Blackhawk and Apache helicopters, F/A-18 and F-35 fighter jets, and guided tactical weapons.

Industrial: The industrial segment designs, produces, and services systems/products for the management of fuel, air, fluids, gases, motion, combustion and electricity.  These products include actuators, valves, pumps, fuel injection systems, solenoids, ignition systems, speed controls, electronics and software, power converters, sensors, and other devices that measure, communicate, and protect electrical distribution systems. These products are used on industrial gas turbines (including heavy frame, aeroderivative and small industrial gas turbines), steam turbines, reciprocating engines (including low speed, medium speed and high speed engines, natural gas vehicles and diesel, heavy fuel oil and dual-fuel engines), electric power generation and power distribution systems, wind turbines, and compressors. The equipment on which these products are found is mainly used to generate and distribute power; to extract and distribute fossil and renewable fuels; in the mining of other commodities; and to convert fuel to work in transportation and freight (both marine and locomotives), mobile, and industrial equipment applications.
